i’m back in black (and white)

time to resume the #fotofeedback blog posts.    I’ve been GONE!

I have been shooting live performances in black and white – seems like most small venues around town have stage lighting that makes everything…and everyone…glow red.  Not flattering.

Both fotos are from shows produced by Momos Cheeskos, a great shaker in the SF Arts scene

night fotos: sheared fire hydrant

Back on June 15th, 2009 a driver ran over a fire hydrant up the street from me in Dogpatch, SF.   It was close enough to the house that I was able to get out there with my Canon Powershot A720IS and a tripod before the S.F. Fire Department managed to turn it off.  When will I get the chance to shoot a foto like this again?

If you don’t already appreciate SFFD, then imagine yourself getting in the middle of this at 11pm on a weeknight :-)

photo shoot: Fox and Moon Tearoom

I had a wonderful afternoon shooting my friend Zo’s beautifully packaged fine teas and delectable treats.    She has a company called Fox and Moon Tearoom – and is also my bandmate in The Razor Skyline.

I could tell by the way she arranged the items for the shoot that her relationship with her products is very intimate.  She had an immediate intuitive sense of what would be visually appealing…

boston terriers: intelligent, friendly…and stubborn at times

a couple of friends have boston terriers – i find them to be rather photogenic dogs.  here is my favorite line from wikipedia:

“Terrier only in name, the Boston Terrier has lost most of its ruthless desire for mayhem, preferring the company of humans, although some males will still challenge other dogs if they feel their territory is being invaded.”

wedding fotos: the random incidentals

in·ci·den·tal ( n s -d n tl). adj. 1. Occurring or likely to occur as an unpredictable or minor accompaniment

..fotos from my friends’ wedding in Muir Beach, California.  I got over 500 captures and am sharing just under 300 with the newlyweds.   I would feel funny about posting photos of the wedding couple on my blog; however I have no problem showing some of the incidental shots that capture the beauty and spirit of the day…

International foto campaign: Women of the Wall

In September 2010 my dear friend Sara Yakira invited me, along with other photographers, to participate in a media campaign in support of the Women of the Wall - an organization in Israel with members and supporters around the world.  This group was founded in December 1988 during the first International Jewish Feminist Conference in Jerusalem, and has been fighting a legal battle asserting the rights of women to conduct organized prayer at the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

Members of the Women of the Wall have reported that when they assemble in the women’s section in the plaza in front of the Western Wall  they have been met at various times with violent and abusive behavior from ultra-Orthodox men and women.  In response, photos have been sent from all over the world demonstrating how Jewish women in the rest of the world enjoy more religious freedom than those in Israel.

These are two of about 40 fotos we contributed:

want to attract bees? they like purple flowers best…

I learned something new today; that bees do like purple flowers best.  I had suspected as much…I like photographing insects on flowers and began noticing that bees are often buzzing around the purple flowers.

A google search lead me to an article by the Discovery Channel which asserts that this color preference gives bees a good start in life.  Purple flowers apparently have a higher amounts of nectar, and bees who innately know this will pass this preference along to their offspring, giving them a higher survival rate over bees that don’t.   The article also states that bees are flexible and can change their foraging behavior preferences.

Great Salt Lake – South Shore

The day after the Razor Skyline show in Park City, Corey, Zo and I managed a quick road trip to the Great Salt Lake.  Pungent smells.  Crunchy salty earth.  Warm water with incredible buoyancy.  Don’t get your head wet – your eyes will really sting.

#1 – are we walking on the moon?  Corey still has reception apparently…

#2 – Zo covered in salt residue

Park City UT – Ford Motors car show

I traveled with The Razor Skyline to perform in Park City, UT at Convergence 16 (August 13th -15th). We stayed at the Treasure Mountain Inn (aka the TMI) which is at the top of Main Street. On the day of the show Corey, Zo and I left the hotel midday in search of a hike, despite the heat and the altitude. The entire main street was blocked off for a Ford Motors car show.

Dogpatch Series: Under Lock and Key

I got on a theme of photographing locks around Dogpatch. Now I’m walking around with a heightened sense of just how many locks there are. I googled the term “under lock and key” and here is what I found:

  • definition: in a safe, protected place
  • title of 1995 “women in prison” movie
  • the third studio album by heavy metal band Dokken, released in 1985

Beyond regular door locks, I’ve shot key-driven industrial door openers…
dogpatch series: lock, garage door

…loney and forgotten padlocks…
dogpatch series: CAT padlock

…some attached to valves and pipe assemblies.
